At work, I have a variety of experiences ranging from the good, the bad, the ugly, and the down-right hilarious! Ryan and I decided that this particular event in my day was post-worthy (and, it was time to update anyway)...I call this post-
"Contemplation"
There are several different units in the hospital that we go to do our draws, this particular day, I was assigned to the psychiatric unit. When I let the front desk know that I was here for Bonnie (name has been changed of course...HIPPA!), they immediately said, "Oh, the LADY phlebotomist is here...Good Luck!" (earlier that morning, she had turned away 2 other phlebs because she wanted a woman...) Alright...here we go. I gathered all of my supplies and passed through the security door to the lock down area. At that time, Bonnie was in the bathroom, and had been in there for quite a while, so the nurse finally knocked on the door to check on her. No reply. Mr. Nurse opened the door, and when we looked in, there was Bonnie, sitting on the toilet, one hand on her forehead, the other holding a Diet Coke. The dialog goes as follows...
Mr. Nurse: Bonnie, what are you doing? Are you ok?
Bonnie: Leave me alone. I'm contemplating about Jesus.
(Mr. Nurse and I look at eachother, very puzzled by this response.)
Mr. Nurse: Well, there are other patients that need to use the bathroom, would you mind contemplating about Jesus in your room?
Bonnie: Ugh. Fine.
Mr. Nurse: Plus- this nice lady here has come to draw labs for you so we can find out what to do to make you feel better.
Bonnie: I feel better. I don't need my blood taken.
But I do want a Sprite or a 7up because I don't feel good.
Mr. Nurse: You don't feel good? I thought you just said that you felt better? Tell you what- If you let this kind lady draw, I will...
Bonnie: DON'T YOU BARGAIN WITH ME PAL! WE ARE AT WAR!
Mr. Nurse: At war?
Me: Bonnie, I am here to draw your blood so that we can find out why you aren't feeling good. Would you mind if I...
Bonnie: Of course I mind! Haven't you been listening? I AM TRYING TO CONTEMPLATE ABOUT JESUS, AND YOU CAN GO TO _____!
(Fill in the blank...I was hoping she would have said HOME or BREAK...)
Meanwhile, Mr. Nurse and I are trying not to laugh...after all, she is in deep contemplation.
What I learned from this experience- never, never interrupt someone in the bathroom, who is in deep contemplation...especially about Jesus.
